Disaster Planning

Disaster planning and risk management are an important part of managing a facility.  Disaster planning begins with a risk assessment,  and planning hinges on proper hazard identification, impact analysis, and identification of critical systems.  Properly done, planning can identify and address the most common threats to a facility and limit exposure, down time and  business interruptions.

Risk assessment analysis is an important part of planning for, averting or minimizing the effects of disastrous situations.  A comprehensive evaluation of risks/hazards highlights areas of vulnerability and facilitates planning and mitigation.  Each facility has different associated risks, depending on the animals used, the ongoing research, site configuration and physical plant.

Risk analysis and disaster and business recovery plans are not static documents, and should be reviewed as facility circumstances change, and as equipment, facilities and personnel change.   Anytime a failure occurs, it is good management practice to review and evaluate both the systems involved and the human response and activities generated by the failure. This allows for continuous process improvement, further limiting the effects of future failures. The severity of the event will dictate how much review is needed, and should be a part of the facility SOPs and the overall site disaster planning effort.

Third Party Review

During times of change or disruption, it is easy to make changes in reaction to individual problems, but we often fail to perform the comprehensive review of policies, procedures and systems necessary to prevent future problems.  A comprehensive review of your systems and procedures based on best practices by an experienced manager can provide a fresh, unbiased look at overall planning.
